Personal, company or trust: how we compare structures

The best way to hold a property depends on your goals, tax position, finance needs and succession plans. We set out the options in general terms; tax advice is provided with a registered tax practitioner and legal work (including company and trust documents) with a qualified attorney.

How a consultation works: tell us about your business, property plans, partners and family → options in plain language → specialist tax, legal and insurance advice → we help put the company, trust, cover and finance in place.

Business insurance: six types of cover
  • Business assets cover Buildings, equipment, stock and vehicles. Ask us
  • Liability cover Public liability and other liability risks. Ask us
  • Business interruption cover Helps replace lost income after an insured event stops trading. Ask us
  • Key person cover Protects the business if a key person dies or becomes disabled. Ask us
  • Buy-and-sell cover Funds a buy-and-sell agreement so partners can buy a deceased partner’s share. Ask us
  • Contingent liability cover Settles business debts you have personally guaranteed if you die. Ask us

Cover is recommended after a needs analysis of your business and is subject to each policy’s terms, conditions and exclusions.

Commercial property finance: what lenders usually ask for
  • Business financial statements and management accounts
  • Business and personal bank statements
  • Company or trust documents
  • Details of the property and the deal

Approval of any finance is at the sole discretion of the lender, which sets its own rates and terms. We cannot guarantee that any application will be approved. Yandisa is not a lender.

Feeder funds vs direct offshore

Rand-denominated feeder funds let you invest in rands for offshore exposure. Direct offshore investing means moving money abroad and holding foreign currency. We explain the trade-offs, costs and risks of each.

Allowances, exchange control and tax clearance

In general terms, South African residents can use a single discretionary allowance and a foreign investment allowance each year, under exchange control rules. Amounts are set by the SARB and SARS and can change; we confirm the current rules when we advise you. Larger amounts need SARS approval before they can be moved offshore, and we help with that process, working with your own or a registered tax practitioner. Get tax clearance help

How an offshore review works

Needs analysis (goals, timeline, existing investments, tax position) → options explained (feeder funds or direct, how much, costs and risks) → help with exchange control and SARS approvals → invest through authorised providers and review regularly.

Offshore risk: exchange rates move and a stronger rand can reduce the rand value of an offshore investment. Values can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you invested. Past performance is not a guide to future performance, and no returns are guaranteed. Foreign markets carry political, economic, regulatory, liquidity and tax risks, and costs can differ. Exchange control rules apply. See the full disclosure.
